Continuing professional education as well as new State-mandated training requirements are coordinated and managed by the Training Section. This section ensures that the standards established by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) are met. The section also establishes training schedules, evaluates training effectiveness, and administers essential classroom and field training exercises.
As the Department continues to expand personnel and services, the fiscal impact of vocational educational programs has increased proportionately. To mitigate some of this impact, the Police Department has researched options to alleviate training costs. One way to lessen costs is through participation in corporate and institutional partnerships.
In March, 2006, the Police Department entered into a contract with the Los Rios Community College District establishing the Police Department as a vocational educational provider for the District. Folsom Police Department employees, with expertise in various subject matters, serve as adjunct faculty for the District. They provide police-related training to Folsom employees as well as employees of other cities and counties. The District reimburses the Department for the use of the instructors and facilities. This contract has provided a revenue stream that is specifically for training, training equipment, and other related costs.
