Mounted Police Unit

FOLSOM POLICE DEPARTMENT MOUNTED PATROL UNIT

History: The Folsom Police Mounted Patrol Unit was established in May of 2004. It is currently a collateral assignment comprised of four horses. The Mounted Unit was established to act as support to the Patrol Division.

Mission: The mission of the Folsom Police Mounted Unit is to represent the Folsom Police Department as ambassadors of goodwill, build community partnerships, educate youth, and reduce crime by providing high visibility patrol.

Community Involvement: The Mounted Unit participates in numerous community and city events. We know that during each of these events we represent the department and have the opportunity to meet and interact with those who share a desire to keep their community safe.

We are also investing time with Folsom’s youth to enhance and build positive relationships for the future. The Mounted Unit has also partnered with the Folsom Police K9 Division to teach a life-science based curriculum in the Folsom Cordova School District.

The Mounted Unit is routinely involved in the following community activities:

  • National Night Out
  • Folsom Rodeo
  • Kids Camp
  • Santa Sleigh Project
  • Youth Education Programs K-12
  • Neighborhood Watch
  • Folsom Police Dog and Pony Show
  • Folsom Live
  • Thursday Night Market
  • Veteran’s Day Parade

The unit is also active in basic patrol duties such as retail parking enforcement, focus enforcement on property crimes, outside agency assist for crowd control and search and rescue operations. Each year the unit conducts holiday patrol in large retail centers from Thanksgiving through January 1st. For the past two years, in those locations where the Mounted Unit was deployed as a preventative measure, there were NO crimes reported. In 2005 there were 340 saddle hours logged. This is actual time spent on the horse deployed in the community.

The unit also works in conjunction with The Grace Foundation which provides feed and board at no cost to the department. The Mounted Unit reciprocates this generosity by doing demonstrations for, and meeting with, teens involved in youth outreach programs at the Grace Foundation Center.

We are proactively involved in our city building community and business relationships and we committed to the Mission, Vision and Values of the Folsom Police Department. As department ambassadors of goodwill, we engage the community in problem solving and promote involvement in keeping Folsom the preferred place to live, work and play.

Funding for the Mounted Unit is shared by the Folsom Police Department, private donations from community stakeholders and members of the Mounted Unit. The unit continually seeks funding to offset maintenance costs incurred to keep the unit active. Both of the city owned horses were donated by generous families who saw the need of community involvement by mounted officers. Inquiries about donations or public presentations, can be directed to Sergeant Dirk Regan, Folsom Police Department Mounted Unit Supervisor.

On behalf of the Folsom Police Department and the Folsom Mounted Patrol Unit, we would like to thank you for your continued support.
