A Letter from the Solid Waste Manager
The goal of the city’s Solid Waste Division is to provide cost-effective and efficient solid waste, recycling and hazardous materials collection services for our residential and business community. I take great pride in the high level of customer service and breadth of programs we provide. Over the past few years, Folsom has seen a great deal of change in its solid waste services. These changes include a new curbside recycling program which will enable Folsom to meet the State’s stringent mandate for recycling 50% of its waste. In March of 2006, we sent out a survey asking residents what they thought of the new program, 92% of the respondents said they use their recycling carts all of the time.
The city also offers one of the only door-to-door collection programs in the state for household hazardous and electronic waste. New regulations have prompted the addition of batteries and fluorescent bulbs to this program. Recycling hazardous waste is critical in protecting our environment from the potentially harmful effects of these materials.
The city’s Neighborhood Cleanup Program is another service that has been improved to provide added customer service to our residential community. These improvements include an increase in the number of pickups allotted per resident from one to three times per year. Appointments can be made at the discretion of each resident, making the program much more convenient. Residents are also able to make their appointments electronically which increases the level of customer service.
As we move forward, our goal is to continue to provide the highest level of customer service through the integration of new technology. Improvements to the city’s website have allowed a greater degree of access to information and services. These services will be evaluated through surveys, focus groups and other outreach & education activities in order to provide the highest level of satisfaction to our community.
Citizen Representation through the UC
Folsom residents play an important role in ensuring utility services are in tune with resident interests and preferences. The Utility Commission (UC) is a seven-member group appointed by City Council. Five of the members are individually appointed, and two are appointed “at large” by the Council as a whole.
The UC meets monthly to review budgets, discuss operations of all utilities (solid waste, sewer and water), and ensure that the City’s utilities staff is well aware of the resident’s concerns.
Meetings are held at 6 p.m., the third Tuesday of every month at City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
