CALIFORNIA'S NEW BUSINESS RECYCLING LAW California Assembly Bill 341 requires that all businesses that generate four or more cubic yards of waste weekly, must establish a recycling program by July 1, 2012. The law applies to a variety of businesses and entities including strip malls, government offices, schools, non-profits, and others. The law also applies to multifamily dwellings of five or more units, regardless of the amount of waste generated. In addition to providing notification, local jurisdictions are required (under the law) to monitor for compliance and provide outreach and education to the businesses and multi-family communities. Folsom SmartCart Recycling Program The City of Folsom implemented the new SmartCart Recycling Program in October, 2005. The program offers residents a blue cart for mixed recyclables, a labeled black or green cart for yard debris and a gray cart for household trash. The gray garbage cart is serviced weekly and the green waste and recycling carts are serviced every other week. The collection schedule can be used to find the service days for your home. SmartCart Program Details Why is Recycling Important? Folsom generates more than 200 tons of waste per day and is expected to see a rapid increase in this amount over the next few years. Recycling considerably reduces the amount of solid waste going to our landfills and helps conserve the Earth's natural resources. It is estimated that 50% of the world's annual wood harvest will soon be used for paper production. Therefore, it is imperative that we become less wasteful and focus our efforts on conserving these valuable resources through reducing, reusing and recycling our waste.

Large Venue/Special Event Recycling State law, Assembly Bill 2176, requires special events to submit a Waste Management Plan for recycling materials generated from their event if they serve an average of more than 2000 individuals and charge an admission. The Plan is part of the city’s Special Event Permit Application and must include: primary contact information, types of waste generated at the event and information on the recycling services to be provided. Large Event Planners may coordinate with the city’s Solid Waste Division or a private recycling company for assistance in developing the plan and recycling the materials generated at the event. Permit Applications must be submitted in person to the Community Development Department, 2nd floor of the City Hall Building, 50 Natoma Street. Multi-Family Recycling Residents in a number of the city's multi-family dwellings can recycle their junk mail, newspapers, beverage containers and other materials all in one dumpster. Recyclables can be commingled into designated dumpsters that can be identified by signs with the chasing arrows symbol and blue colored lids. Residents can also get a free tote carrier (while supplies last) to conveniently store and carry their recyclables to the recycling dumpster. Award Program winner.

"Kikkoman Foods, Inc., a food manufacturing company located in Folsom, Calif., manufactures and distributes naturally brewed soy sauce. The company respects the workings of nature and is committed to maintaining a clean, healthy environment as an important part of its business. The company has instituted recycling programs in the following areas: General paper (0.81 tons), cardboard (17.79 tons), plastic (2.34 tons), pallets, glass, aluminum cans (0.08 tons), soy cake (1,798.97 tons) soy oil (27.46 tons), batteries, fluorescent lights, and wheat chaff (45.46 tons). Kikkoman saved approximately $96,896.94 through its recycling efforts in 2010. Another goal for Kikkoman is to reduce the use of natural resources such as gas, electricity, and water. In 2004, the company was also recognized for its efforts by the Sacramento Sustainable Business as one of the most active and successful companies.
