Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. That’s why the Folsom Public Library is joining the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-up Month this September to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a free library card.
A Folsom Public Library card will provide free access to more than 1.5 million collection items – books, music, movies, eBooks and more. The library plays an important role in the education and development of children; bridges the learning gap by offering a wide range of digital and print resources; and offers free access to technology and innovative educational programming. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement.
Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies, learn how to make a robot or just relax with peers. The Folsom Public Library also offers access to a variety of print and digital resources that can be accessed in person or online.
“Our library provides access and programs for students of all ages,” said Lisa Dale, Library Manager. “For preschool age children we offer early literacy and lap sit storytimes to encourage school readiness, for older children and teens we supplement education with hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM )programs, and for older teens we have information and tools to help prepare for college and mentoring programs. There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card.”
New cardholders will receive either a free book from the Friends of the Library, an Einstein Café coupon, or free admission to the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. Throughout the course of the month, the Folsom Public Library will host a contest with the chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card. Visit the library’s photo booth and tag your photo with #fplcardcontest to submit your entry.
