New California Public Safety Laws

New California Car Seat Law Takes Effect As of January 1, children under the age of 2 must be in a rear-facing car seat, unless the child weighs 40 pounds or more, or is 40 inches or taller.  California law continues to require that all children under the age of 8 be properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat in the back seat of a vehicle.

New Hands-Free Driving Law Under Assembly Bill 1785, California motorists are no longer permitted to hold a wireless or electronic wireless communications device while driving a motor vehicle. Rather than holding the device, it must be mounted on the dashboard, windshield or console. Cellphones can be mounted in two spots on the windshield: either a 7-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield on the passenger side, or a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield to the driver’s left.  Read the entirety of AB 1785 online
