Volunteer to Inventory Local Trees

Do you enjoy being outside and walking around your neighborhood or other areas of Folsom?  We urgently need volunteers to inventory street trees using a mobile GPS device.

The City received approval of a grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal-Fire) to accurately inventory and assess the City’s protected street trees (all trees within 12.5 feet of the property line facing a public street). A major component of the grant requires the use of volunteers to assist with the inventory of these trees. The volunteers will be provided the use of a mobile GPS device and all the training and equipment necessary to identify trees, take accurate measurements, make tree assessments regarding structure and health, and locate the trees. This information will be downloaded into the City’s GIS database so that the City can ultimately prepare and maintain a long range urban forestry management plan.  We need to complete the work as soon as possible.  This would be a great project for adults, or families with children who wish to tackle this together.

Register to volunteer on the Hands on Sacramento website --
 http://www.handsonsacto.org/, following these instructions:

(1) Locate the "Find Volunteer Opportunities" box at the top of the page.
(2) Enter Folsom's zip code (95630) in the zip code field.
(3) Click "Search."

You should now see not only projects within the City of Folsom organization, but also any others entered by local non-profit organizations.

Please note that the website will require you to first register as a volunteer in order to submit your interest in a particular project.  Please also note that if you are under 18 years of age, you will need to submit a youth waiver.
