Rattlesnake Safety in Folsom

Post Date:04/22/2025 8:16 a.m.

As temperatures rise, rattlesnakes become more active—especially from April through October. Whether you’re out for a walk on Folsom’s trails or spending time in your backyard, it’s important to stay aware and take simple precautions to avoid encounters.

Rattlesnakes are generally not aggressive and prefer to retreat if left alone. Bites typically happen when snakes are accidentally stepped on or touched by people or pets.

Tips to Stay Safe Outdoors:

  • Stick to well-used trails and avoid tall grass or brush.
  • Wear sturdy boots and long pants; children should avoid flip-flops.
  • Keep dogs leashed and stay alert if they wander off trail.
  • Never reach into spaces you can’t see, such as under logs or rocks.
  • Don’t hike alone; always go with a buddy.
  • While swimming, avoid grabbing sticks or branches—snakes can swim.
  • Avoid handling freshly killed snakes, as they can still deliver venom.
  • Teach children to respect snakes and leave them alone.

Snake-Proofing Your Yard:

  • Install a snake-proof fence: solid or mesh no larger than ¼ inch, at least three feet high, with the bottom buried a few inches into the ground.
  • Angle fences outward at a 30-degree slant.
  • Keep vegetation trimmed and remove rock or wood piles carefully.

If Bitten by a Rattlesnake:

  • Stay calm and act quickly.
  • Remove rings, watches, or other items that may constrict swelling.
  • Get to the nearest medical facility immediately.

Do NOT:

  • Apply a tourniquet.
  • Use ice or cut the wound.
  • Attempt to suck out venom.
  • Give alcohol to the victim.
