Warmer weather and longer days mean mosquitoes are making a comeback. Increased rain from a wet winter creates stagnant water and more breeding areas for mosquitoes. More mosquitoes mean a greater risk of West Nile virus, a disease transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito.
Protect yourself and your family by following these tips from the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District:
- At least once a week, walk your property and remove any standing water. Check and drain water from buckets, flowerpots, fountains, children’s toys, pet dishes, cans, birdbaths, tires, wheelbarrows, and other containers.
- Don’t overwater your lawn. Clogged street gutters with standing water can become breeding sites. Use your yard waste container for grass clippings and debris.
- Stock ornamental ponds, fountains, and animal troughs with mosquitofish. The District provides them free of charge and will even deliver them to your home.
- Drain water from pool, spa, and boat covers.
- Always wear effective mosquito repellent, especially around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, or anytime you’re outdoors.
