Dry vegetation poses a fire risk during hot summer months. The City of Folsom manages over 980 acres of open space, nearly all of which is weed abated to maintain fire-safe buffers between homes and open land. Property owners must maintain defensible space of at least 30 feet from structures or property lines—up to 100 feet in high-hazard areas, as determined by the Fire Chief. These rules apply to both public and private properties. The city reduces dry vegetation using staff, contractors, and grazing animals. Goat herds will clear over 730 acres this year, including areas previously maintained by work crews. Weed abatement follows a schedule based on fire hazard ratings.
