The City of Folsom Waste and Recycling Division will begin conducting random, periodic visual audits of curbside garbage, recycling, and organics bins next week as part of the annual Route Review program. These reviews are mandated by California Senate Bill 1383, which, along with the Folsom Municipal Code, requires residents to place recyclables, organics, and garbage in the appropriate collection bins.   

During the reviews, city staff will briefly lift bin lids to visually inspect contents and may gently move items near the top to check for contamination. If materials are sorted correctly, a “Keep up the Good Work” tag will be left on the bin. If more than 10% of the visible contents are found to be contaminated, an “Oops” tag will be issued. This tag will outline the items of concern and offer guidance on proper sorting. No fines or penalties are issued as part of this process; route reviews are only intended to promote proper recycling habits. 

No materials will be removed from bins during inspections. Reviews will only take place when bins are placed curbside for regular service. Staff conducting the audits will work in pairs, wearing high-visibility vests and official ID badges, and will perform reviews between 7 and 9 a.m. Learn more about the city’s organic recycling program at www.folsom.ca.us/organics.

Incorrectly sorted waste can compromise the entire recycling stream, lower the quality of recyclable materials, and reduce the ability to repurpose natural resources effectively.
