The California State Fire Marshal designates areas across the state as moderate, high, or very high fire hazard severity zones based on standardized criteria. These designations consider factors such as vegetation, terrain, weather conditions, and wind patterns that contribute to wildfire spread.

Once updated fire hazard severity maps are received, local agencies must make them available for public review and comment within 30 days. This process allows community members to stay informed and provide input on fire risk assessments in their area.
