How the City Maintains Streets

The City of Folsom uses several types of pavement maintenance treatments to help extend the life of local streets, improve ride quality, and protect the city’s transportation infrastructure. The right treatment depends on the age and condition of the street, available funding, and planned work in the area.

Some street work may look temporary or unfinished at first. In many cases, maintenance happens in stages, and one treatment may be completed before another begins.

Crack Sealing

Crack sealing fills cracks in the pavement to help keep water out and slow further damage. Water that seeps into cracks can weaken the road base and lead to potholes or larger pavement failures over time.

Residents may notice dark lines or bands on the street after crack sealing is complete. While the treatment can look unfinished or messy at first, it is often an important step before additional pavement work.

If crack sealing is taking place in your neighborhood, it may mean slurry seal or another street treatment is planned next.

Slurry Seal

Slurry seal adds a protective surface layer to the street to help extend its life. It is typically used on streets that are still in good enough condition to preserve, rather than streets that need major repair or reconstruction.

After slurry seal is complete, residents may notice a darker road surface. This is normal and helps protect the pavement from weather, traffic, and everyday wear.

Slurry seal work can require temporary street closures, parking restrictions, and curing time before streets reopen. Residents in affected areas will typically receive advance notice with instructions about parking, access, and when streets are expected to reopen.

Five-Year Pavement Management Plan

The City of Folsom updates its pavement management plan on a regular cycle to help guide future street maintenance and repair work. The plan provides a five-year look-ahead and helps the city identify pavement needs, prioritize projects, and make the best use of available funding.

The latest five-year plan is in final review and will be shared soon. Planned work may change over time based on funding, road conditions, construction costs, and other city priorities.
